Sharks, Sailfish, Barracudas and also Fishing with Vin the Chin aboard Hooked Up

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

Here we are on the last day of March and what a great way to end the month!!

We started out fishing with Brain, John, Matt and Bart all from Missouri.

We were looking for BIG fish and we had a smoking north current so we started out a bit south of our inlet and set out both kites with 3 live baits suspended from the kites along with one shark bait also suspended from the kite. We were fishing in 100 feet of water because the day before I had seen 2 sailfish in reel shallow. As we were drifting to the north at about 2 knots all we were getting were kingfish bites and at the cost of  $6 dollars per bait and all they were doing was biting the tails off this just was not working out.

So I slowly worked our way out to 350 feet of water and while we kept the same spread of baits out of the kites we added a couple more shark baits down deep.

Truth being told here we waited and waited with no bites and to make matters worse I was listing to al the other captains on the radio and it seemed that no one was getting any bites.

All the same at this point we were committed so the trap was set and the wait continued when all of a sudden I seen our kite clip pulling down hard and while I could not see a fish their had to be some thing pulling at it.

Finally I seen this 3-foot silky shark darting around out there and at last he got hooked.

Now after all this waiting you would think that this was a good thing that finally we had a fish on the other end BUT that was not the way we felt as we had this little shark next to the boat and all at once out of no where I see this big hammer head shark racing around every where trying to find what he had smelled just seconds before. (RATS AND DOUBLE RATS) Captain Greg scrabbled as fast as he could to get another shark bait out there but by the time we got another bait out there the shark was long gone.

Ok back to waiting!!

Than all at once I seen this hammerhead back out there trying hard to zero in on our bait and BAM we were Hooked Up.

Brain wasted no time jumping in the chair and the fight was on.

Within 15 min Brain had this shark to the side of the boat. Maybe a little too fast because at first this hammer head was just laying there next to the boat just as peacefully as could be but as we slowly slid him into the boat so we could get the hooks out ALL HELL BROKE LOSE he went nuts.

Now bare in mind our intent is to release the fish unharmed and we like to get the hooks out to give him a much better chance to survive.

I had a rope around his head and I just pulled him tight against the chair and held him tight till he settle down but not before his tail made a mess of the boat.

Ok finally we got the hooks out a quick measurement to have a replica trophy made and right back to the sea he went. Captain Greg let us know that the fish went a little nuts due to his embarrassment for this was his first boat ride. (LOL)

Ok at this point we were a good 5 miles north of our inlet and running short on time because of our next trip that would be waiting for us at the dock.

But all the same we were going to fish till the very min.

And that’s just what it took because just as we were going to bring in the baits here comes this BIG sailfish and he was hungry. After watching him chasseing the live bait right behind the boat for 30 to 40 seconds BAM he got it and we were Hooked Up again. This time Matt jumped in the chair and the fight was on and on and on this fish was putting it to us and this is the one time we really needed a smaller fish due to the time factor but it is what it is and we were going to catch this big one.

(And we did) Once again hooks out quick measurement and back to sea to fight again another day. Now it was haul #$@^$ back to the dock.

Brain, John, Matt and Bart thanks again and now get off the boat this trip is over! (LOL)

And now we had Ryan, Danny, Anthony and his brother the wrestler Vin the Chin all from C.T.

Vin the Chin is an up coming wrestler and they were all down here in South Florida for the Wrestle Mania event being filmed down here at the stadium and being showed all around the world.

No the Chin was not fighting but hopefully by next year he’ll be the next Hulk Hogan and when he does remember the little people you knew Chin! (LOL)

Ok back to fishing this afternoon we went fishing down to the south with our kites live and dead baits suspended from the kites.

Fishing was tough due to all the sea weed that was spread out all over the place but all the same we did catch a big barracuda out of the kite.

And than we switched over to trolling witch was also very tough again due to the sea weed but we did catch a black fin tuna for dinner.

One last note on the chin I was going to body slam him BUT he was a nice guy and i did not want to hurt his carer!!

Guy’s thanks again for fishing with us and hope you guys have a ball at the Wrestle Mania.

Fishing with the guys from Toledo Ohio aboard Hooked Up

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Today we started out our day fishing with Jimmy, Steve, Paul, Dave and Bob all from Toledo Ohio.

We started out trolling the reef with 2-planner boards running 45 feet deep and 3 baits skipping across the surface.

While trolling was on the slow side we did manage to catch 5 kingfish and 8 to 10 small bonitos witch we kept alive in our live well.

Than we brought in the trolling gear and started dropping these live bonitos on a ship wreck.

On our first drop the second the bait hit the bottom the rod bent over and just like that we were Hooked Up.

But after 2 or 3 min the line went slack and just like that the fish was gone.

After reeling the line up we found that a shark or some kind of a toothy critter bit through the leader. (RATS)

Ok this time we dropped with a wire leader but now no takers. (RATS AGAIN)

Ok off to another wreck and once again the second the bait hit the bottom BAM Hooked Up again Jimmy jumped in the chair and this one was hooked good. BUT after 5 min of back and forth tug a war the line did not go slack but it got very light.

As jimmy reeled in the line his jaw just dropped as he seen his catch or should I say his half a catch! Jimmy had caught the head of a big amberjack. That’s right just a head of what would have been a 25 to 30 pound fish.

Well we told him to keep reeling before a big one eats it. (LOL)

Once again off we went to another wreck and I can’t remember who got in the chair but at last we landed a small 12 to 15 pounder BUT just as I was trying to take a picture our angler tossed him back. (RATS)

Guy’s thanks again to all of our anglers today sorry fishing was a bit on the slow side but all the same you guys were a blast to spend the day with and I know we will be seeing you again next year.

Father and son catch BIG Hammerhead aboard Hooked Up off Fort Lauderdale

Monday, March 26th, 2012

Today we had a father and son team of Rob and his son Luke from Wisconsin out for a few hours of deep-sea fishing off the coast of fort Lauderdale aboard Hooked Up.

Today we went right for Big Game Fishing with our kites flying with live and dead baits suspended from them along with a couple shark baits down deep.

And YES again it was the deep rod that paid off as it bent over and line started peeling off the reel as if there were a fright train on the other end.

This turned out to be a father and son team effort as Rob took pictures and rutted for Luke while Luke was reeling with all he had in him. After a good 25 min up popped this MONSTER and I do mean a MONSTER hammerhead shark. Not only was this a monster sized Hammerhead it turned out to be a male as you can see by the claspers just behind his anal fin. While these sharks do get well over 8 foot in length it is not everyday you see a male of this size. Way to go Luke!!

Finally after what seemed forever J.J. was able to slide him through the tuna door while Captain Greg came down and got all 3 hooks out a quick picture and measurement of these trophy sized  Hammerhead shark and back out to sea he went.

Rob truth being told I am sorry I did not write this fishing report as acutely as I should have the first time. But please bare in mind I was not on the boat and I do write so many fishing reports specilly this time of the year while we get these big peligic trophy sized fish moving through the water off the coast of South Florida.

Also to the rest of my readers and anglers if you see I have missed wrote where you are from or any mistakes I might make please don’t hesitate to call or write me and I will fix it right away. Not to mention some of you out there get a lot better pictures than Greg or I can get while we are trying to lead these big fish to the boat with out hurting or running them over PLEASE e mail us your pictures!!

Rob and Luke thanks again for fishing with us aboard the Hooked Up off the coast of Fort Lauderdale.

Luke Lands Big Sailfish aboard Hooked Up off Fort Lauderdale

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

Today we had Luke and Josh from Kirkwood Mo. Out for a little deep-sea fishing aboard the Hooked Up off the coast of fort Lauderdale.

We started out trolling the reef and catching a couple of kingfish.

Ok skunk out of the box and time to try for the big one. So out went the kites with some live baits suspended from them.

That’s when all hell broke lose. All of a sudden out of nowhere up popped this big sailfish Luke jumped in the chair and the fight was on.At first this fish was dancing all over the surface but then it turned into a down and dirty tug a war as this fish just went down deep and was just digging for all he had. Luke hung in there and 15 min later Luke had done it.

We had this 6 foot almost 7 foot sailfish to the boat.

Luke nice job and guy’s thanks again for fishing with us aboard the Hooked Up.

Hammerhead And Tiger Sharks aboard Hooked Up

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

Today we started out fishing with a couple of guys here from Las Vegas on business Andy and Carmine.

Big fish or Bust was the plan so out went the shark baits and just like that the trap was set.

Than it happen the deep rod bent in half and the fight was on. At first Carmine jumped in the chair and all he could do was to hang on as this fish was peeling off line and Andy was busting his chops. Than Andy jumped in the chair and yep you guessed it Carmine let him have it right back. This fish was fighting so hard that we really had no idea what the heck was on the other end but back and forth tug a war and back and forth they kept taking turns fighting this sea monster. After a good 45 min up popped this 9-foot hammerhead shark.

Holly cow I was beat just watching these guys!

We did manage to slide him in through the tuna door to get all the hooks out quick pictures and measurement and back out he went to fight again another day.

Guys what can I say but (That’s a nice fish)

As we pulled back to the dock I had to fish on our other boat while Captain Greg took out Jo Jo, Vinnie and Kim all from Fort Lauderdale.

Greg took them right back to shark fishing in the same spot where had fishing earlier this morning and once again it was the bottom bait that got hit.

While I was not on the boat for this one nor was our camera witch I had with me on our other boat I was told that this fight was just as hard as the one earlier.

They had fought this fish for over 30 min BUT when he popped up everyone was as surprised as they could be when this 8-foot tiger shark came up and showed his teeth.

WOW what a catch I sure wish I would have left the camera aboard with Greg but we are supposed to get the pictures e-mailed to us and as soon as I get them I will post them.

Great job to all of our anglers today.

Bottom and Shark Fishing Aboard Hooked Up

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Today we started out fishing with Dan and his dad Tom along with his grand parents Alice and Sal all from Buffalo New York.

Fish for a good eating was what they were looking for and we did just that.

We started out trolling without any luck so we went out to 410 feet of water and tried some deep drops with a chicken rig and started catching some GREAT eating tilefish.

While we never did find any Mahia Mahia we did catch more than enough good I mean great eating tilefish.

As we got back to the dock we had a family from Canada eager to give their luck a shot aboard the Hooked Up.

We had Chris and Jennifer and their children Mathew, Chris and Justin.

Once again we started out trolling but all we managed to troll up was one small black fin tuna. So in came the trolling gear and out went the kites with live baits along with a couple of shark baits down deep.

It did take quite some time but all at once one of the deep rods bent over and we were Hooked Up.

It turned out to be a family affair with everyone taking turns trying to get this big sea monster to the boat.

After a good 30 min of this back and forth tug a war up popped this nice hammerhead shark.

We did manage to slide him through the tuna door to get all 3 hooks out of him got a quick measurement in order to have a replica trophy made of their catch and then slid him right back out to fight again another day.

Thanks again to all of our anglers today for fishing with us aboard the Hooked Up.

Today on this rough day off the coast of Fort Lauderdale we had Dan, Dave, John and Kent all from Kansas City out for a few hours of deep-sea fishing aboard the Hooked Up.

Due to the rough seas we went right to kite fishing with 4 live baits suspended from the kites.

Finally we got a bite on our right long kite bait and Dan jumped in the chair just as this big sailfish started jumping out of the water.

It was a good 20 min back and forth tug a war but at last Dan got his first sailfish to the boat.

More Great Fishing Aboard Hooked Up off Ft Lauderdale

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Today we had Kevin, Erin, Lisa, Jen and Jim all from Ma.

We started out trolling the reef with 2 planner boards running about 45 feet down and 3 baits skipping across the surface. We ended up with 6 black fin tunas, 3 bonitos and 1 Mahia Mahia.

Ok enough of trolling time to go for the BIG one.

So in came the trolling gear and out went the kites along with a couple shark baits down deep.

Than once again the deep line took off Jim jumped in the chair and the fight was on.

This fish was for sure giving Jim a big problem it seemed we just could not budge him but after 10 min finally Jim started to gain a little line. But just as he started to gain right back out it went. (RATS) Back and forth but after 30 to 40 min we finally got this BIG Hammerhead to the boat.

Just as we were trying to get a quick photo of Jim’s shark the fish went nuts and was gone before we could get any pictures. As we were watching him swim away BAM another hammerhead on one of the kite baits!

This time Kevin jumped in the chair and again the fight was on. Back and forth back and forth but at last Kevin had his Big Hammerhead to the boat.

This was the second day in a row that we had caught 2 hammerhead sharks in the same trip!

Sharks are showing up good and so is the fishing good that is so give us a call and lets get you Hooked Up!!

2 Hammerhead Sharks in same trip off Ft Lauderdale aboard Hooked Up

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

What an action packed day aboard the Hooked up.

Today we had Kim and Chris along with Doug, John and Doug out for a day of deep-sea fishing aboard the Hooked up off the coast of Fort Lauderdale.

We started out the day trolling the reef and while trolling was not red hot we did catch a couple of king fish along with 10 small black fin tunas and one remora.

After trolling for a couple of hours we worked our way to a shipwreck that lay in 250 feet of water.

Once we got to the wreck Captain J.J. sowed a live bait to a hook and down he went.

From there it wasn’t long till the rod bent over and line stated peeling off the reel. Captain Greg went ahead with the boat to insure that we did not get pulled back into the wreck. Doug jumped in the chair and the fight was on. It was a back and forth struggle but Doug hung in there and at last this big amber jack was in the boat.

Nice going Doug!

Ok one BIG fish caught time to try for a sea monster!

Out went the kites with live and dead bait suspended from them and down went a couple shark bats.

Than all of a sudden BAM one of the big rods bent over and line was coming off the reel as if a truck was on the other end! Chris jumped in the chair and was in for the fight of his life.

(Hang on Chris the rod costs more than this fishing trip) (LOL)

What a blast watching Chris gain a little and just like that the shark would take it right back. Back and forth tug a war for a good 30 min till @ last up popped this BIG HAMMERHEAD SHARK!

Chris great job way to hang in there!!

Well if it worked once what the heck lets try it again!! So right back out with the shark baits and YEP BAM another bite and this time Doug jumped in the chair.

And yes once again gain a little and lose a lot back and forth but at last Doug’s Hammerhead popped up.

Two Hammerhead sharks in one trip now that’s what we call a killer day of deep sea fishing off the coast of Fort Lauderdale.

Guy’s thanks again for fishing with us aboard the Hooked Up.

Bill and William catch BIG Barracuda and BIG Shark aboard Hooked Up

Friday, March 16th, 2012

Today once again it was a father and son fishing trip with Bill and his son William from Baltimore.

We went right after Big game fishing in 350 feet of water with 2 kites flying high with live and dead baits suspended from them along with a shark bait down deep.

Our first bite came out of the kite when this 50-inch plus barracuda grabbed the bait and started jumping all over the place. William jumped in the chair and the fight was on. Truth being told here while it was a big barracuda it really was not much of a fight due to the fact that the barracuda took the shark bait that was suspended out of the kite but was connected to a big shark rod.

All the same we had caught a big fish and the skunk was out of the box.

Than all of a sudden one of the big shark rods bent over and the reel fight was on.

This was going to be a father and tag team to land this sea monster. It turned out to be a good 30 min back and forth tug a war but Bill and William hung in there and @ last we had this big hammerhead shark to the boat.

We managed to slide him through the tuna door for a few pictures and a quick measurement for a replica trophy made and than we got him back into the open sea with all hooks out and away he went in great shape to fight again another day.

Bill and William thanks again for choosing to fish with us aboard the Hooked up.

They had the (Will) to catch both sea monsters at the same time

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Today we had a farther and son team Howard and son Harrison from Frank land Tennessee out for a little 4 hour fishing trip that turned into a fishing trip of a life time.

We started out kite fishing with 3 live baits and one dead bait all suspended from the kites. We also sent a shark bait to the bottom along with another shark bait half way down.

We started out catching a Mahia Mahia than soon after that we caught another Mahia Mahia and than yet another when all of a sudden all hell broke lose when our bottom rod bent over and line was coming off the reel as if their was a fright train on the other end.

Harrison jumped in the chair and the fight was on. When I say the fight was on really all Harrison could do was to hold on the rod while this monster on the other end just kept taking the line out.

After a good 5 min of watching the line peel off the reel the fish finally slowed down a bit and Harrison started to gain a little. But soon after that once again the line went back to coming off the reel. After 15 min of this Harrison needed a little rest so dad jumped in the chair to lend a hand.

Bare in mind while all this was going on we still had baits suspended from the kites.

All of a sudden I noticed a big wake heading for the shark bait we had suspended from the kite.

I yelled down at J.J. to watch out something big was headed for the other bait.

This fish I got a look at and it was a BIG and I do mean BIG hammerhead shark and BAM just like that we had 2 sea monsters on at the same time.

(Fishing hours of boredom interrupted by moments of panic and chaos)

Now we had our hands full!!

We kept Harrison on the first fish we had on and Howard jumped on the big hammerhead.

After 15 more min of this the lines were getting close to each other and we were sure the 2 lines were going to cut each other. But J.J. thinking quick on his feet he went under one rod with the other and some how we were still Hooked Up.

Finally we got a glimpse at Harrison’s fish and we put the heat on him. Once J.J. got a hold of the leader there was no letting go. We had a bull shark hooked in the side and he was not happy about it. J.J. tried to get the hooks out of him but needless to say someone was going to get hurt so he cut the leader as close to the shark as he could and off he went.

Ok one down and one to go. Finally 35 to 40 min later Howard had this monster Male hammerhead shark to the boat.

By the time we got him to the boat the shark was tired and had calmed down. We were able to slide him through the tuna door for a couple of pictures a quick measurement to have a replica trophy made of him got all three hooks out and watched him swim away in good shape to fight again another day.

Did I forget to mention that their last name was Will? And trust me it took all the Will they had to catch these fish.

Guy’s thanks a bunch it was a blast and this was one of those fishing trips I will remember for a long time.
