Fishing on the last day of 2010

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Today we had a shard charter with a regular customer/friend Rob and his son Jack from Ft Lauderdale along with Anton and his friend from New York.

I am sorry to say that today was just one of those days that fishing was just plain old slow.

However we did manage to catch a few king fish while trolling the reef with our planners.

I’ve also got to say as the sating goes the ocean was angry today but much to my surprise everyone hung in there and everyone had a good time all the same.

Anton I am looking forward to making it up to you on the 9th and Rob thanks again and next time we’ll catch more than enough.

Hours of Boredom interrupted by PANIC and CHAOS

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Today we had a shred charter with Eddie and his wife Ellen from Alabama and Frank and his 2 sons witch we never did get their names. Sorry about that guys.

We went right to kite fishing in 150 feet of water with 4 live baits suspended from the kites.

After a good hour with not so much as a nibble I decided to work my way out to deeper water.

Once I had worked our way out to about 350 of water J.J. set out a shark bait on the bottom along with another shark bait just drifting behind us.

After another long 45 min of waiting just as we were about to bring in all the baits and switch to trolling Captain J.J. yelled from the cockpit to keep an eye on the deep line!! No sooner did the words get out of J.J. mouth the deep rod bent over and line was screaming off the reel.

Eddie jumped in the chair and the fight was on.

At first there was no stopping this fish but after about 10 min the fish settled down and Eddie started to gain some line on this SEA MONSTER.

Than out of nowhere up popped this hammerhead shark after one of our kite baits. Then BAM we were Hooked Up again now we had Eddie fighting his fish and one of Frank’s son’s fighting this hammerhead shark on 30-pound test line. Talk about getting covered up!!!

They say that fishing is hours of boredom interrupted by moments of panic and cayus. Well this is the perfect example.

While this hammerhead was still taking line Eddie was getting his fish closer and closer to the boat. Once Eddie’s fish was close enough we slid him in the tuna door got a few quick photos and a measurement of his shark and watched him swim away in good shape.

Ok one down and one to go. We fought this hammerhead for another 20 min but I’m sorry to say that he did finally bite through the leader and got away. (RATS)

While we did not have a lot of action during the whole trip we sure got a lot in a very short period.

Guys thanks again for your patience and for hanging in there aboard the Hooked Up

Sails Kings and a boat load of FUN aboard Hooked Up

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

This morning we started out our day fishing with Mark, Martin, Stan and Luke all from Chicago Illinois.

We motored out to 150 feet of water and set out both kites with 2 live baits suspended from each kite and the trap was set.

After a good 30 min of waiting without a bite when all of a sudden this big sailfish popped up and darted after our left long kite bait.

It only took a matter of seconds and we were Hooked Up.

Martin jumped in the chair and the fight was on. This was Martin’s first shot at a big fish like this but he was up for the challenge. There was going to be nothing easy about this fight! At first the sail was dancing all over the surface putting on this great show for us but then he just headed down and kept digging down deep.

It seemed Martin would gain 10 feet then the fish would take 20 it was a back and forth tug a war for well over 30 min but Martin hung in there and soon enough Martin got his first monster sail to the boat.

WHY TO GO MARTIN

After getting a Measurement of Martin’s sailfish and a couple of quick photos back out went the baits and once again the trap was set.

Soon afterwards Mark caught a nice king fish followed up by Stan also boating a kingfish.

Guy’s thanks again for a fun morning of deep-sea fishing aboard the Hooked Up off the coast of Fort Lauderdale.

As we pulled back to the dock we had our afternoon trip eager to give their luck a shot @ some deep-sea fishing.

We had Paul, Michelle, Daniel, Steven, Stephanie and David all from Philadelphia.

Ok this afternoon it was not big fish that we were after it was just action and hopefully some good eating fish.

So we went trolling down the reef with 2 planner boards running about 45 feet deep along with 3 baits skipping across the surface.

The good news was that the kingfish were biting about as well as I have ever seen them bite and we had our limit before I knew it.

The bad news was that we never did find any dolphin fish or any other kind of good eating fish.

While kingfish may be an edible fish they are quite oily and if you don’t like the taste of strong fish then you properly won’t like king fish witch was the case with our group from Philly.

All the same we had a ball and once again I would like to thank all of our anglers today for fishing aboard the Hooked Up.

Atif fishing by himself has a great day aboard the Hooked Up

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Today we had Dr Atif Husseim chartered the boat for his son and a couple of his friends.

As luck would have it a few of the guys that the good doctor was taking out bailed out on him in the last min and he was left with no one to fish with.

I was talking to him on the phone and we decided what the heck he was already paying for the boat and the weather is a cool 55 degrees without a cloud in the sky and chances were fishing was going to be real good.

So off we went just Captain Greg, J.J. and the doctor.

Now truth being told I am sitting in my office when I get this e mail from the Doctor him self  while they are still out there fishing with a attachment on his e mail and he had just caught his second sail fish of the day  and he wanted me to post it on my blogs NOW so the guys that bailed on him could see what they missed out on (LOL) (LOL) (LOL)

That’s all for now but he still has another hour to fish so we might be updating this fishing report.

O wait just a min JUST IN he just caught his 3rd sail fish!!!

Doc thanks again for fishing with us. You are a first class guy.

Great Fishing the day after Christmas aboard Hooked Up off the coast of Ft Lauderdale

Sunday, December 26th, 2010

Here we are the day after Christmas and getting out of bed is not easy with our full bellies.

So I didn’t; Captain Greg and Captain J.J. are running the shows today because A it is cold as heck and B I’m the boss so I am just sleeping in today. (LOL)

Ok now that we’ve got that out of the way lets get back to the fishing trip.

Today we had Morris and Phil from Toronto Canada and Stuart and John from England aboard for some deep-sea fishing.

As it turned out I should have worked because they had a great day of fishing.

They went trolling today catching a box full of king fish, a big black tip shark yes on the troll and 5 nice dolphin fish.

Ok all kidding aside I took my camera home for the holiday and we got no photos of today.

To my crew and to all of our anglers today thanks for making the Hooked Up look great.

Fishing christmas Day Aboard hooked Up

Saturday, December 25th, 2010

Today we had our old customers/friends from Venezuela out for a few hours of deep-sea fishing aboard the Hooked Up off the coast of Ft Lauderdale.

We had Arnaldo , Alberto, Manuel, Silomon, Juancho and Roberto.

Today eating fish was the target and seeing we had a west wind the chances of finding a weed line with some dolphin fish on it was slim to none.

So we decided to troll the reef looking for some kingfish.

We ended up with a few nice kings along with a big barracuda and a special surprise a black fin tuna.

Guys thanks again and we’ll see you guys again soon.

One more check off of Jeff’s Bucket list And fishing with a soon to be super star in tennis

Friday, December 24th, 2010

Today we had Jeff from Toronto Canada out fishing all by himself looking to get a sailfish off his bucket list.

Today was not the first time that Jeff has fished with us aboard the Hooked Up but today was going to be the first time Jeff has ever caught a sail- fish if I had anything to do with it.

We picked up some live baits and started running up the north closer to Pompano. We knew the sailfish would be heading south and we were hopping to get north of the rest of the fleet and get first shot at the fish.

Once we got to where we decided to fish out went both kites with 2 live baits suspended from each one.

Ok the trap was set and everything looked great. We had a good north current and while the water was not a crisp blue it was a clean green looking in color so good enough.

As we were waiting to check sailfish off of Jeff’s bucket list we did manage to catch 5 nice king-fish but no sail fish.

It seemed like forever when all of a sudden Captain Greg yelled up @ me and said he thought something was trying to eat his right long kite bait. It was all most imposable to see the bait due to the glare from the sun.

Than all of a sudden out came this sailfish dancing all over the surface of the waves.                                                                                        WE WERE HOOKD UP

Jeff got in the chair and the fight was on. This fish fought all the way to the boat coming out of the water giving us a great show.

Once Jeff got his sailfish next to the boat we got a few got pictures of him cut the line and watched him swim away in great shape.

Jeff thanks again it was blast watching you catch your first sailfish.

As we got back to the dock we were getting ready to clean the boat and call it a day a bit earlier today since it was Christmas eve BUT than we got a last min call about a group that was looking to get out for a few hours so their would be no early day today.

We had Brain and Jill along with their daughter Sue who brought along her two kids James and Kalie all from London England.

As it turned out they were all here in South Florida for a few mouths due to a big tennis tournament that Kalie was going to be in.

While I never did get their last names Kalie is the # 1 tennis player in Great Britain at the age of 14 and under and by the looks of her there’s a good chance the rest of the world will know who she is by the time she is 18.

We went right to kite fishing with no bites at all for well over an hour.

While a few of the boats were seeing a sail here and a sail there we just never got a shot and we just could not stand waiting any longer so it was time for plan B.

We brought in all the kites and set out 2 planners running deep along with 3 more baits skipping across the surface.

At last we found fish!! We ended up catching a couple kingfish and a few big bomber bonitos.

Guy’s thanks again for your patience and Kalie best of luck with you modeling I mean tennis career.

Fishing with the FAM from Westchester NY

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Today we had Mom and dad Steve and Fiona and their 3 children Lawrence, Caroline and the little terror Will all from Westchester New York out for a few hours of deep sea fishing aboard the Hooked Up off the coast of Fort Lauderdale.

We swung by the live bait boat and picked up some live baits and headed right out to 110 feet of water and started out trolling.

We set out both planners with bonito’s strips running behind them along with three baits skipping across the surface.

We worked our way to the north off the coast of Pompano where we planned to set out our kite baits in hope of catching a sailfish or two.

As luck would have it we did catch a couple of kings on our way up but once We brought in the trolling gear and set out our kites that was the last bite we had in over a couple of hours.

While conditions looked good for sail fishing we never had a bite with the kites and live baits.

Ok back to plan A and this time we made the right choice because the kings started biting and every one ended up catching fish.

We even dragged mom away from her book and got her to reel one in.

We ended up with a good hand full of king fish and one nice cero mackerel.

Steve and Fiona and the rest of the Fam you guys are first class and we hope to fish with you guys again soon.

Sails and Kings snapping aboard hooked Up off the coast of Fort Lauderdale

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Today we had Debra and her daughter Jenifer and her son Brandon who is down here from Knoxville Tenn. on a golf tournament.

We started out picking up some live baits (goggle eyes) from the bait boat and took off running to the north to get far away from the rest of the fishing fleet.

Once we got up north off the coast of Pompano we set out both our kites with two baits suspended from each kite and another bait out of the out rigger.

At first it took and bit of waiting after the trap was set but all at once up popped this sailfish all over our right short kite bait.

J.J. locked up the reel handed it to Brandon as I went ahead with the boat and we were Hooked Up.

This was one crazy sail fish it started out jumping all over the surface but then he just got his head down and just kept digging down.

Than as Brandon got him closer to the boat it went nuts again and was dancing all over the back of the boat.

At last Brandon’s sail made the wrong turn and J.J. was able to get him into the boat.

Way to hang in there Brandon.

Ok now thing were looking a lot better for us and before you knew it we had all 4 baits back out.

No sooner did J.J. get the baits back out there when BAM another sail popped up and once again we were Hooked Up.

This time Jenifer jumped in the chair and the fight was on.

It took a good 15 min till we got her fish close enough to the boat to get some great pictures of him jumping behind the boat.

Ok 2 down and now what to do???

We talked it over and decided to try some trolling to see if we could catch a few more fish in a short time we had left.

As it turned out we could do no wrong today.

At first trolling was slow but once we found the school of kings we ended up catching them one after another.

Guy’s thanks again for a fun morning of Deep-sea fishing off the coast of Fort Lauderdale aboard the Hooked Up.

Great unexpected Day aboard Hooked Up

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Dec 20

This morning we started out with a father and son team from South Florida we had Craig and his son Alex and we went out for a short 3-hour Deep sea fishing trip aboard the Hooked Up.

Who would have guessed that in about 2 hours of fishing we would have had such a great trip?

We started out trolling the reef with 2-planner board running about 50 feet down along with 3 baits skipping across the surface.

With in no time we had a hand full of king fish in the box.

Ok the skunk was out of the box so what the heck lets see if lady luck would continue to shine on us.

We brought in all the trolling gear and set out both kites with 2 live baits suspended from each kite.

Well today was just our day because within no time we had also caught a big barracuda along with the first sailfish they had ever caught.

Steve thanks again and we’ll looking forward to fishing with you again in a couple weeks.

We pulled back to the dock and lady luck was still shinning on us. We had a couple of guys Pedro and Michel from Texas pull up and said they were looking to go deep-sea fishing.

So off we went on our second unexpected trip for the day.

This time we went right to kite fishing and YES it happen again a monster sailfish jumped on the line and we were Hooked Up again.

This one turned out to be a big 88 inch sail fish and all we could say was WOW it was just one of those days we could do no wrong.

We started out our day with no trips on the books and it turned out to be a banner day not just for today but we also developed some new repeat customers.

Guys thanks again for a great day of fishing off the coast of Fort Lauderdale aboard the Hooked Up.

Great Fishing Day for Golfer

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

Today Nick from New York chartered the boat to take his son Mark and his son’s golf coach Crabby out for the afternoon for a few hours of deep-sea fishing off the coast of Ft Lauderdale.

We started out trolling the reef with 2 planner board running about 45 feet deep along with 3 surface baits skipping across the surface.

We caught a half a dozen king fish in about the first hour of fishing.

Ok we had the skunk out of the box and everyone had caught fish now it was time to go for a big one. In came all the trolling gear and out went the kites with 4 baits suspended from them.

At first kite fishing started out slow producing no bites when all of a sudden up popped this big sailfish all over one of our little live baits. At last he took the bait and line started walking off the reel. We locked up the reel and that’s when all hell broke lose.

This fish went nuts dancing all over the surface of the waves. Mark jumped in the chair and the fight was on.

After a good 20 Min Mark got this monster sailfish to the boat.

J.J. reached over and pulled Marks sail aboard for a quick photo and a measurement to have a replica trophy made of Marks first sail.

Way to go Mark!!

Nick, Mark and Crabby thanks again for a fun afternoon.

BIG BARRACUDA MAKS DAY

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Today we had Dana surprising her husband Ken on his 50th B day with a fishing trip.

We started out kite fishing with 4 baits suspended from 2 kites in 150 feet of water. We slowly moved out to 200 feet of water and then drifted back into 100 feet of water with out getting the first bite.

Ok fishing was just plain old slow but we still had another trick up our sleeves so we caught a half a dozen little bonitos and kept them alive in our live well.

Captain Greg worked his way into a ledge that dropped from 14 feet of water to 36 feet of water and J.J. put some trouble hooked in a couple of the live bonitos and set them out.

Before we even got the two baits set BAM the water-exploded line started screaming of the little spinner reel and we were Hooked Up.

Ken grabbed the rod and the fight was on. At first we almost got cut off when this sea monster darted straight for the ledge but Captain Greg was ready and got the boat on the out side of the ledge and avoided getting cut of.

After a good 15 min back and forth tug a war Ken finally got this monster barracuda close enough for J.J. to get a gaff into him.

Nice catch Ken and once again Happy B DAY!!

Catching sails and Sharks with the Boys from Canada

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Today we had Gram, Jason, Kevin, Mack, Joey and Matt all from Canada out for a day of deep-sea fishing aboard the Hooked Up off the coast of Fort Lauderdale.

We started out our day picking up some live goggle eyes (Live Bait) from the bait boat and we headed right out to 150 feet of water and set out both of our kites with 2 live baits suspended from each kite.

Ok so the trap was set and now all we needed was for some big fish to come along and eat one.

It didn’t take long till we got our first bite or should I say our first bites. We had 2 sailfish come up @ the same time and we managed to keep a hook in one of them and Joey wasted no time getting in the chair. It took a good 20 min till at last we had caught our first fish of the day.

It seemed that our first fish broke the ice because soon after that Kevin caught another big sail soon to be followed up by Jason’s black tip shark.

Guy’s thanks again for a fun action packed day of fishing.

Try not to freeze your butts off up there this winter. (LOL)

Fishing with the gang from Sam’s Marine

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

Today we had some locals from Fort Lauderdale charter the boat because of their good friends came down to visit from New Jersey.

We had Edd from Sam’s marine one of the only Hatterass dealers that can still get old Hatteras parts and his wife Gail their good friend Doug and of course Pete who came down to visit.

At first fishing was a bit disappointing because it seemed the sailfish stopped biting but then all of a sudden we watched this fish hit the bait like a rocket and after 2 or 3 shots this nice Wahoo finally got a hook in his mouth and we were Hooked Up.

Pete grabbed the rod and the fight was on. Talk about a fast fish!! This fish ran to the left and then at a blink of an eye he darted off to the right. This went on for about 10 seconds next to the boat till this Wahoo zigged one to many times in front of captain Greg and it was all over for the fish in a second.

Nice going Pete and Greg that was one hell of a gaff shot.

We also caught a 5-foot black tip shark.

All in all a slow day but once we got back to the dock and heard what the other boats caught we were feeling a lot better about our catch.

Edd thanks again for bring everyone aboard the Hooked Up.

Sail Fish Snapping off the coast of Fort Lauderdale aboard the Hooked Up

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Well here comes one of our first cold fronts of the year and along with the cold fronts should be the sailfish right behind them.

We started out this morning with Hoss and his good friend Larry both from Saskatoon Saskatchewan Canada leaving tomorrow on a Crew Ship and decided to give their luck a try at some deep-sea fishing aboard the Hooked Up.

I’ve got to say that they could not have picked a better time of the year for some deep sea fishing here off the coast of ft Lauderdale.

We started out by getting some live baits from the bait boat and headed right out to 155 feet of water where this ship had been anchored up for the past 4 or 5 days.

We set out both kites right next to the ship with 2 baits suspended from each kite.

The baits were all set and the trap was set all we needed now was for some big hungry fish to come along and take a bite.

First of all the wait was for about 3 min and not only did a big sailfish show up but 2 showed up @ the same time.

WE WERE HOOKED UP WITH A DOUBLE HEADER SAILFISH!!

What a blast we had one fish going north and the other going south so these guys were on their own there was no chasseing ether of these fish down.

But at last after a good 35 min of back and forth tug a war we finally got both fish to the boat and released them both in great shape to fight again another day.

We ended up catching 3 out of 5 sailfish this morning and we still had another trip to take out today.

Hoss and Larry thanks again we had a ball and hope your cruse goes as great as your fishing trip.

As we pulled back to the dock we had Andy and Katie from Wyoming eager to give their luck a shot aboard the Hooked Up.

I must admin that the bite did slow down for us in the afternoon however we did finally get a bite and this was a monster sail fish this time and Katie jumped in the chair and the fight was on.

I think this one fish gave us more trouble then the double header we had caught earlier today but Katie hung in there and after a good 30 min we finally got her sailfish to the boat.

We got a couple of quick pictures and a quick measurement to have a replica trophy made of her first sail and watched him swim away in good shape.

To all of our anglers today thanks so much for fishing aboard the Hooked Up.
