This morning we started out with a shared charter. We had Ricardo and his son Ricardo JR from Bowie Marry Land and Sonya and her husband Corey from Fort Thomas Kentucky.
We started out trolling the reef just to get everyone a few fish. It did not take long before everyone had caught a bunch of kingfish. Once again they were as we call it SNAPPING.
Now that everyone had caught fish we were going after a big one. We set out our kites with a couple of live baits suspended from them and also 1 big dead bait also suspended from one of the kite. We also put a big shark bait 150 feet down and another one 350 down on the bottom.
The trap was set and the wait was on. It took a good 40 min till we seen any more action but all at once our deep rod bent over and line started peeling off the reel. (We Were Hooked Up)
At first everyone helped in clearing most of the lines out of the water so this sea monster we had on would not get all tangled up in the other lines. The only 2 lines we still had out was one of our kite baits that was way out there on the kite and out of the way and of course the rod that was bent over with this big fish on the other end.
It was pretty obvious that this one was going to take quite some time to get to the boat so everyone once again played a part and took turns trying to get this monster to the boat.
But once Ricardo got in the chair it was plain to see he was determined to get this fish to the boat. Once he did finally get this Hammer Head Shark to the boat he decided that he wanted us to get a measurement of the shark so he could
have a replica trophy made of his catch.
Once again it was a team effort but we did manage to slide this shark in our tuna door get all the hooks out of his mouth got a couple quick pictures and slid him back out the door to swim away to fight another day.
For those of you that might be wondering how we go about getting such a big fish in the boat take the hooks out and slide him back out the door let me explain it a little for you.
When we get hooked into one of these big fish we’ve got to clear the other lines so as not to get all tangled in them as we are doing this remember the fish is fighting to get away. Once the fish settles down a bit we start gaining line on him. By the time we do finally get the fish to the boat side they are usually pretty tired so as we grab the leader and slowly guide the fish toward a tuna door which is open and the bottom of the door is right there at the same level as the water outside we can just ease them in on their belly. This also makes it much easier for us to get all the hooks out of the mouth or where ever else the hooks might have the fish snagged and in turn this also gives the fish a much better chance of survival..
Anyways back to this fish after we got our measurement and a couple of quick pictures we slid him out the door and as we were all high fiveing and shaking hands I noticed that the one bait left in the water was just about to be piled on by yet another hammer head shark.
(GAME ON AGAIN)
I could not believe this was the middle of Aug this is not the right time of the year for these sharks to be around but we’ll take it.
Once again team effort paid off and we got out second hammerhead of the day next to the boat. This time we were not going to take a measurement of the fish so I came down in the cock pit to give Jay Jay a hand in trying to get the hooks out of this shark’s mouth. In this case what we do is we try to gaff any hooks that are not in the fish’s mouth and cut the leader so the fish has a good chance swimming away in good shape.
We did finally get the hooks out of our second shark’s mouth and no one lost any fingers (LOL)
When we got back to the dock we were throwing our kingfish up on the dock and this seemed to gather a crowd around the boat and everyone was asking us and our customers about our fishing trip. It only took me a couple of seconds to see that it looked as if a couple of these people might want to go it and give their luck a shot at catching some nice fish.
We ended up with quit an interesting group on the boat we had Kenny from Tai Wan and a professional poker player from Las Vegas. You might have seen him on T V his name is Tommy Venus or AKA (TV)
Tommy was in South Florida to see his daughter Camilla.
So off we went to see if we could do it again. We started out trolling on the reef and once again we caught some kingfish. Then we went right back out there in 350 feet of water and put out our shark baits.
This time we had to wait for over an hour but all at once BAM we were Hooked Up and it was GAME ON
Tommy waited no time getting in the chair and his daughter wasted no time running up on the fly bridge with me. She wanted nothing to do with a big shark.
It took Tommy a 45 min to finally get this hammer head to the boat but with the help of Kenny we were able to sli
de him in for a quick measurement and a few pictures.
What a day it seemed nothing could go wrong. As we docked the boat we noticed that all of Kenny’s family was there waiting for us. It seemed that Kenny and his family were all big poker fans and they all wanted to take pictures with our mini celebrity TV we all had a ball.
Thanks again to all of you for today’s great day of fishing.

I can’t say why all these sharks are here but it might be in part to so many kingfish and bonitos around but for whatever reason come on down and be a part of this great fishing in Sunny South Florida.
